Make sure your glossary is saved in UTF-8 format, e.g. with TextPad for Windows or TextWrangler for Mac.
The glossary has to be tab-delimited:
source term TAB target term;alternative target term
Alternative translations should be separated by the semicolon character ';'.
If you want to use Subject fields and/or Notes too, insert extra tab characters:
source term TAB target term;alternative target term TAB Field TAB Note

In TextWrangler the example glossary looks like this. Invisibles are being displayed (the triangle indicates a TAB).
Note the (Unicode UTF-8) info on the status bar.
Choosing an existing glossary
- Choose Library > Glossary > Add glossary or term list
The Choose file dialog is displayed
- Navigate to the location of the existing glossary on your computer.
- On OS X Mac select ‘OS X/Unix’ in the Entries separator field.
- On Windows select ‘Windows’ in the Entries separator field.
Saving the resource definition for the existing glossary
- Click on the OK button to save the glossary definition.
The automatic creation of the ProjectTerms glossary by CafeTran, the manual creation of an empty (new) glossary (Glossary > New glossary…) and the addition of an existing (e.g. downloaded from the internet or supplied by your client) glossary (Glossary > Add glossary…) are three completely different workflows.
