It is important to differentiate between lexicographers and translators: Whereas a lexicographer is an author or editor of a dictionary, a translator is a person who translates from one language into another, especially as a profession.
Whereas a lexicographer collects lemmas (lemmata), which are the canonical forms or dictionary forms (citation forms, headwords), a translator also collects declined, inflected and composed forms.
Lexicographer will list: |
Translator will list: |
---|---|
run | run, runs, ran, running |
go | go, goes, going, went, gone |
The disadvantage of the lexicographic approach for a CAT tool is that you will not get any glossary matches for other words than lemmas.
