Fysische grootheid die de massa per volume-eenheid van een stof uitdrukt. De soortelijke massa wordt doorgaans aangeduid met het symbool ρ (rho) en uitgedrukt in kg/m³, g/cm³ of kg/l.

density
The mass per unit volume of a substance, typically denoted by the symbol ρ (rho) and expressed in SI units as kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³).
Density is an absolute physical quantity, describing how much matter is contained within a given volume of material.
Other English variants (attested, but context-dependent)
- mass density (explicit, formal)
- volumetric mass density (rare; didactic contexts)
⚠️ Note:
Density must not be confused with specific gravity.
Specific gravity is a dimensionless ratio relative to a reference substance (usually water at 4 °C), whereas density is an absolute quantity with units.
Usage notes (important for translators)
In Dutch technical and patent texts:
- soortelijke massa and dichtheid are used synonymously
- values are typically given in absolute units (e.g. kg/l, kg/m³)
- the term refers to a measurable physical property, not a ratio
In English translations:
- density is the correct and preferred equivalent
