In de jaren ’40 werd het gebruik van op zich i.p.v. ‘op zich zelf soms als een germanisme (D. echter ‘an sich’!) beschouwd. De woordenboeken delen deze opvatting niet: Van Dale, Koenen en Kramers beperken op zich tot het katholiek taalgebruik. Andere woordenboeken (bijv. Weijnen) maken dit verschil tussen op zich (kathol.) en op zich zelf (protest.) niet meer. In ieder geval is op zich helemaal ingeburgerd.
